Tucked away

I am often asked: “What do the bees do in the winter?”

Once the temperature dips below 12 deg C, the bees begin to form a cluster.  By consuming stored honey and vibrating their wing muscles they are able to keep the center of the cluster at and the queen at around 35 deg C. They can go through 30kg or even more stored honey before the first flowers and trees provide food again in the spring.
